Simulation of traffic inside a large church

Large special-purpose facilities, such as arenas, convention centers, and churches, have unique traffic flow concerns, both of parking lots and internal foot traffic. Does your architectual firm have traffic simulation or agent-based modeling capabilities? Many will claim they have "experience with large facilities", but do they have a scientific approach to testing various operation plans? Most do not.

Technologies that can help:

Agent-Based Modeling (ABM)
An approach to model complex systems through relatively simple behaviors of numerous individual agents (e.g. people). Agents may exhibit different behaviors and can lead to unexpected results and insights.
Facility Traffic Simulation
An application of ABM, directed towards understanding vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Is your church considering expansion plans? Ask your design firm about church traffic simulation, both internal and external. Make plans to understand your church traffic flow, both now and in the future. Let us partner with your church and your design firm early on in the design process to plan and explore your anticipated needs.

From simple floor plans, data gathering, and identification of delay areas (e.g. nursery pickups, coffee counters) we can quickly mimic some of your major congestion areas. Once we match the current situation, we can easily explore immediate opportunities such as:

  • Timing between services
  • Ministry locations (e.g. adult education, youth, senior, children)
  • Don't have a particular Sunday ministry (e.g. adult education)? What would happen if you did?
Of course, for a building expansion, there are numerous possibilities to explore before you break ground.
  • Additional exits and arteries
  • Wider hallways or doors for better flow
  • New arteries, rooms, and ministries

Simulation of church service ending

Here is a partial movie of a simulation of a church with a sanctuary with an 800 member capacity. In this building layout, they currently only have one main artery leading to their children's area.

There's no reason not to ask the "what if's". There's no reason not to expect traffic flow simulation from your facility designers. If they do not have the capability, please contact us today.

Other facilities where this application could be useful:

  • Arena traffic flow simulation (vendors, parking, exits, capacity)
  • Malls
  • Theaters
  • Concert Halls
